American Mary (2013) Review:
American Mary is a dark and twisted horror tale that follow Mary, a young surgeon woman, into her journey through a mad world that will quickly overcome her.
It is a very gory film. It features lots of torture scenes and was obviously made to shock. It however manages not to fall into the voyeuristic pit (e.g. not like Hostel). Instead, we’ve got a film with a really dark and unsettling atmosphere. In that, it reminded me a lot of Maniac from the same year.
The actress, Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, Freddy vs Jason), is what makes this movie unforgettable and recommendable to everyone. With her beautiful voice, she manages to be both sexy and dreadful.
Maybe the only drawback is the lack of a stronger story. The plot is nice but somehow lacks surprises or twists to make it unique. Some sub-story, like the love story with the bar manager, simply leads nowhere…and leave a slightly bitter aftertaste to this however great success for the Soska sisters.
