Review:
Along with The Fly, Scanners is one of David Cronenberg’s most famous film, and one of its best one too. The science-fiction set up of the story, built around the ability of certain people to scan other people’s mind and make them go mad, is fascinating. This movie somehow reminds of an early version of the X-men series with all the questioning around the acceptation of mutant in our society, their threat to power, etc. All this greatly exploited in Scanners and really keeps the story captivating. The perspective of an army of these scanner guys and what they could do together is really intimidating.
Although there are not much action or too much gore in this film, the little that is present is worth it! The head explosion and cerebral battles are of course the highlights of this movie. I also loved the main character, a really bad-ass scanners played beautifully by Michael Ironside; a guy that really managed to give me the creep.
The overall story is great and like in most of Cronenberg’s movie, the atmosphere is bizarre and oppressive. One last word to say that the final battle is simply unforgettable, (reminding me of a DragonBall Z episode)! This movie is forever engraved in my memory because of that one scene!
