Evil Dead (2013) Review:

This reboot of the Evil Dead Franchise is really an intense experience. It has been a while since I a film shook me up like this and, two days after, I still cannot get it out of my mind.

This remake really respects the 1981’s version, both in terms of story and realisation. Fans of the original film will recognize their favourite scenes, as well as the great camera effects that made the glory of the original (camera moving in the woods, close ups, etc.). In terms of story, this reboot keeps the essential and, without giving any spoilers, introduces a major twist which really caught me off guard! It is usually hard to surprise viewers once making a remake, but here it is very cleverly done and was a complete success for me. This, along with initial story of the girl being in need of drug, help putting some flesh on the thin backbone that was the initial Raimi’s Evil Dead.

Evil Dead 2013 is also one of the goriest things ever seen; defining a new stone mile in the splatter genre. The effect of light and contrast are really beautiful, and the huge amount of blood gives a particular taint to the film. And as if that wasn’t enough, this Evil Dead is really scary! The atmosphere is extremely creepy, the attacks of the demons are really vicious and the possessed characters terrifying, often taking the viewer totally by surprise!

In conclusion, I loved everything in that movie, it is perfectly paced and very intense, taking the best out of the original add adding what was lacking to it. I often despise remake, but this time I am going to face it, it is a work of genius and it is better than the original. It will be hard for a film to do better this year.
