MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D is pretty much what you would expect from a film of this genre in this day and age: young women who look like Maxim and Stuff models; over-the-top-gore; stints from actors of the great horror films of days gone by; and fast-paced editing.  A remake of the original 1981 film, which itself was made in response to the success of 1978's HALLOWEEN and 1980's FRIDAY THE 13TH by turning a yet another holiday on its ear, also embellishes upon the notion that a truly evil murderer cannot be stopped.  Or, at least it seems that way.

The premise is old hat to the horror cognoscenti but that should not in any way detract from one's decision to see the film in 3-D which, in comparison to the format that was available to audiences in 3-D's heyday in the 1950's (HOUSE OF WAX, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE) and it's short-lived resurgence in the early 1980's (AMITYVILLE 3-D, COMIN' AT YA!, TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS, JAWS 3-D, and the second sequel to FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH) is light-years ahead of anything that you've seen before.  The glasses that you're given prior to entering the theater are plastic, comfortable, and work wonders to give the impression that images are popping off the screen.  Even the opening credits come to life.

Best of all, Tom Atkins, one of my favorite character actors, please a sizeable role as a cop who has spent his life in this mining town that harbors the awful history of several miners who were accidentally killed in a mining accident years prior due to an oversight by supervisors who left their posts to go to a Valentine's Day party.  The sole survivor was Harry Warden who exacted revenge on those whom he felt were responsible for his near burial in the mine.  Now, he appears to be back.

The film is an entertaining display of flying tempers and mayhem and has some very good acting and leaves the door open for the usual sequel.  Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, and Kerr Smith are all quite good in their respective roles.  Betsy Rue is very comical in a 3D sex scene that spills out into a parking lot, making one wish that Savanna Samson, Briana Banks, and Sunny Leone would bring their thespian skills to the 3-D format.

A word of warning - if you're going to see this in 3-D, I stress that you call the theater first and make sure that they have it in this format.  This will offset the disappointment that you will inevitably face if you rely on the Internet to provide you with accurate information regarding 3-D locations, and just might make you want to run a pick-axe through the head of the nearest usher/snob who informs you that it's only in 2-D...
