Ha Ha Ha...
I laugh at all of you who have said FEAR ITSELF sucks.
I'm sure none of you nay sayers know it but you missed a winner this past Thursday night. It was Stuart Gordon's turn in the directors chair and he hit a home run. EATER is a masterful piece of storytelling bringing a style of horror to network TV that has rarely if ever been seen before.
We already knew Gordon could tell a damn good story in the "hour" story format but could he do it under the restraints of "censorship" and the "network mentality". Hell yes he can.
EATER basically takes place in one setting. On a snowy night in a small town the local police are taking custody of one nasty customer. Duane Mellor, wonderfully played by Stephen R. Hart is going to spend a little time in their lock up. He's a serial killer and if that is not enough he is also a EATER. Yep, he likes to consume his victims, which we get to witness through a series of pretty disturbing flash backs.
The other major player in this tale is a pretty deputy played by Kate Moss. We learn about her background as a goth girl horror geek and of course she is drawn to the darkness that surrounds this prisoner. She is fascinated and terrified by the stories that are spinning around the station about this one.
It is revealed that EATER is a Cajun and practices voodoo and also that he "supposedly" can shape shift if he consumes the heart of whatever he has killed.
Needless to say folks start showing up with their hearts missing and our 7 foot freak show has escaped from his cell. Now the fun begins as a cat and mouse game of who's who and who can you trust enfolds that ends in a vomit spewing, satisfying ending that is both dark and satisfying.
Gordon does an amazing job of keeping the suspense high and the horror level surprisingly high and he leads us through this story of cannibalism, death and the supernatural.
EATER is every bit as "on the mark" as any of the MASTERS OF HORROR episodes and I don't know that Gordon would have put this one together any differently if it had been aired on the old SHOWTIME series.
It just goes to show you, good storytelling is good storytelling and ratings or where it is shown has little if anything to do with how good the project ends up being.
NBC, pay attention. this is what FEAR ITSELF should be. Edgy, disturbing and well done.
