Horror with a conscious is a hard sell. Film makers can tend to come off preachy or bitchy or worse yet, condescending.
The latest film to throw its hat into this ring is the Larry Fessenden directed eco-thriller THE LAST WINTER.
First off let me state that THE LAST WINTER is a wonderfully directed film. Fessenden and crew do a marvelous job of creating an environment that is not only scary because of the strange things going on but also scary because of how brutal and vicious the weather and elements are. A wonderful ensemble cast led by genre vet and fan favorite Ron Pearlman find themselves trapped in the wilds of Northern Alaska where they have been sent to set up a drilling base to start pumping some more oil for the beautiful Alaskan wilderness.
Things start going horrilby wrong when one member of the team wanders off in the middle of the night and is found the next morning a good ways from the camp and is stark naked and quite frozen and dead.
Things deteroate quickly from this point and it is blamed on the fact that the artic has warmed to a point that gases are being released from the ice because it is to warm. They explain it well in the film and it actually comes off as being plausable.
THE LAST WINTER is a smart film and an important one but it is not without its
problems. First off, it is a bit slow. The action when it occurs is good but the action is poorly paced and a lot of time is spent on setting up the fact of just how "out of the loop" these poor bastards are. They are pretty much alone and the film makers want to make damn sure you realize it.
Also it is very, very close in tone and style to THE THING and also to a degree ALIEN. Think of those films as far as story goes and add lots of dialog and less cool special effects and you pretty much have THE LAST WINTER.
So, is it worth a look? Absolutely. Just be prepared for what you're getting into and don't be expecting a non stop thrill ride.
Other folks have deemed this one "The Scariest Movie Of The Year" and such and I don't know about all that but it is a well done thriller that does make its point well and leaves you thinking about global warming and nature in a much different way.
Give it a ride, I think you find it time well spent.
THE LAST WINTER is available July 22nd from Genius Products.
