I am not a big comic book person so I had not read the WITCHBLADE series so when TNT aired the show I really didn't pay it much attention. I knew it was there and that it had a bit of horror twist to it but still my interest was not peaked enough to make me tune it.
My mistake. I should have been watching.
It really is one of the coolest thing about DVD. The fact that you can find something you missed the first time around and not only see it but keep it to watch again whenever you want. WITCHBLADE is effective on several different levels. As a straight drama series the show works well mainly because of the fine acting and production values that seemed to maintain itself through out the two season run of the series.
Yancy Butler is extraordinary as lead heroine Pez which is short for Pezzini the characters last name. She is a NYC detective whose persuit of an orginized crime figure brings her to being the recipient of the WITCHBLADE a glove of sorts that possesses the power to battle the greatest of evil. As the shows continue Sara (Pez) learns how to control the WITCHBLADE and is consistently amazed by just how powerful the tool is.
As an Action series each epoisde is cram packed full of shooting, stabbing, fighting and just all around bad assness.
As a Horror series the tales are just strange enough and the topics just crazy enough to keep any self respecting gore hound compelled to keep watching.
All in all the series is completely enjoyable and well worth checking out. I don't want to ruin any of the fun for all of you so I won't go into a show by show breakdown. Let's just leave it that it is a well written, well acted little piece of genre fun that is well worth having in your collection.
