Finally got around to sitting down and watching PROM NIGHT the much much discussed often dissed remake of the classic Jamie Lee Curtis vehicle of my youth. I had read and heard what everyone else had to say and as I am sure you are aware not much of it was good.
So I settled in last night expecting to be bored and horrified at what they had done to yet another of the films of my youth and imagine my surprise when I ended up actually enjoying the damn thing.
Yep, that's right. I liked it.
You know, I don't know what's up with folks these days. It seems that as soon as any horror film comes out that anything less then an R rating and is named after a film from the 70's or 80's it is automatically dismissed and thrown into the trash with the label of "remake" and given no other consideration.
Technically, what is a remake? I would consider the modern version of PSYCHO a remake. It was almost shot for shot the same film that Hitchcock made. I do not consider the modern THE FLY to be a remake. It has almost none of the same elements of the B&W original with the exception of the whole "guy turns into a fly" thing.
With that being said I would not and do not consider PROM NIGHT to be a remake. It is simply a film with the same name as a film from my youth. It could have just as easily been called ROOM 312 or HOTEL PARTY HORROR or any other corny title you can come up with.
Fact of the matter is PROM NIGHT ends up being a pretty well crafted tale and a bit of a throw back to some of the films of the late 80's and early 90's. Not particularly scary to us hard core fans but to the millions of "tweens" who are out there cutting their adult horror teeth this one is kind of an instant classic and probably will be remembered by them the same way that the original is remembered by my generation.
The film does suffer from some laughable inplausablities but who cares. It's fun. Hell, I even jumped once or twice and you would think I would know better by now. This film instantly transported me back to being 15 years old and watching HE KNOWS YOU"RE ALONE or WHEN A STRANGER CALLS and being scared out of my mind. You look back at those films now and realize that they weren't particlularly well made or scary but they did the trick at the time and that is about the highest praise I can give PROM NIGHT.
It does the trick.
The film looks great and the disc is loaded with the usual array of extras, a gag reel, making of feature, cut scenes and commentary. I enjoyed the whole package.
I'm telling you don't take other foks word on this one. Pick it up and give it a try I'm thinking you might be pleasently surprised at what you find.
Don't expect a gore filled splatter fest that's not what this one is about. Just sit back, relax and try and get in the frame of mind of when mom and dad dropped you off in front of the theatre and for a couple of hours all you had to worry about was sinking low enough in your seat that the killer on the screen couldn't see you and I think you'll find that PROM NIGHT is one you might pop into the DVD player more than once.
PROM NIGHT is available now anywhere you buy your horror.
