The single best show on TV today.
Seven little words that completely sum up the way I feel about DEXTER the Showtime series that follows the life and times of one Dexter Morgan who works as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department during the day and at night is a serial killer.
He don't kill just anyone though. Oh no you have to be a special case to see that dark side of Dexter. Season one introduced us to Dexter and his screwed up life. Actually the beginning of the second season does a really great job of bringing you up to speed so that Season Two makes sense in case you forgot or didn't bother to watch Season One. Why you would have missed it is beyond me but if you did, you're covered.
So, Season Two picks up right where we left it at the end of the first part and Dexter is having a hard time getting back in the saddle when it comes to blood letting. It's been a while since he killed the Ice Truck Killer (aka, his brother) he has the need and desire but he just can't seem to make himself do it.
Things take an interesting turn as Dexter's little hiding place gets discovered and the bodies of all of his past victims are discovered and the FBI is called in to investigate the grisly find.
As the investigation wears on and Dexter begins to fear his gig may be up his personal life gets equally as complicated as Rita, Dexter's squeeze becomes convinced that Dex is a drug addict and encourages him to enroll in a 12 step program which he does and he meets a sexy, dark woman by the name of Lila who will play heavily in the season.
To go any further would ruin the viewing for you and you really do need to get this disc and watch it.
Easily the best written show on TV right now and arguably the best acted and best cast on TV DEXTER is an excercise in excellence. The episodes play out like a well oiled machine and when you think it can't possibly get any better they shoot for the moon and achieve a standard that few if any shows have ever reached.
DEXTER is destined to become a show of legend and if you miss being a part of the fun you're going to spend weeks kicking yourself in the ass for being such a doofus.
The series is great but I'm afriad I have to take issue with the special features or should I say lack of special features with this presentation. Now if I'm going out to lay down my hard earned pay on a disc set titled DEXTER wouldn't you think that I would want and expect the disc to be just crammed full of all things DEXTER? Well, hell ya you would but instead this box set comes with teaser episodes of other SHOWTIME shows.
Now don't get me wrong. These shows they are pimping are great, great shows, The Tudors, Californication, great stuff but I wanted Dexter damn it.
Unfortunately the special features for DEXTER: The Second Season end up playing like a long aggrivating commercail for Showtime and it annoyed me greatly.
Luckily all ends up being well because the actual episodes on the disc are just so damn good that you end up forgiving Showtime for deciding to use all that precious disc space to pimp their wares.
DEXTER: THE SECOND SEASON is great, amazing TV and should be required viewing by anyone attempting to call themselves a horror fan. Buy the disc for the episodes just don't expect any "behind the scenes" or "making of" fun. At least not this time around.
DEXTER: THE SECOND SEASON is available now anywhere you buy your DVD's.
