In my opinion 2009 has been a great one for horror DVD's

It seems that every week another must own title finds it way to home video and this week that streak continues with the release of SPLINTER.

Directed by Toby Wilkins SPLINTER takes the formula of starting with  a crime drama and infusing supernatural elements to bring us one of the most original and horrific films in a while.  The film opens with a young couple heading out on their Anniversary camping trip.  They have been looking forward to a nice secluded camp site where some sex au natural is on the menu.  They find their nice secluded spot but soon realize that they are not cut out ftor the great outdoors and decide to head back into town for some phone in a motel room.  On their way back they meet up with a fugitive couple whose car had broken down and they are taken hostage.  At gunpoint they are ordered to start driving into town and as things start to get kind of heated in the car they run over some kind of animal and blow out their tire.

The tire has been speared by some kind of prickly porcupine like splinter which the main bad guy gets pricked by.  Things get a little weird but the tire gets changed and they are back on their way.

They come across a gas station and stop to fuel up and get some snacks.  The lady companion of the bad guy goes back to use the bathroom as one stays back to pump gas the bad guy takes his lady hostage and goes into the store to buy some pop.  Their is no attendant around so the place get kind of ransacked and then things get interesting.

The station attendant is found dead in the bath room and he ain't looking so good.  He has some of those prickly things growing out of him and attacks the bad guys lady.

From this point on this film becomes a full on creature feature and we get the good old  "strange mix of folks thrown into an odd situation fight to save their lives" thing.  Think FEAST or FROM DUSK TILL DAWN and SPLINTER is every bit as good as either of those films.

One of the most disturbing things in this film is how the parasites that are the true creatures of this one react once they infect their human hosts.  They kind of contort and change the human body into a twisted mass of flesh that shakes and jolts around.  It really is disturbing and horrible, but in a good way.

I found myself completely involved in SPLINTER and applaud the originality and awesome spin that the film makers where able to achieve.  Above I comapred it to FEAST and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN and as much as it is simular to them it also is completely different.  I know that doesn't make a lot of sense but watch the disc and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

I love horror that doesn't have to dumb itself down to appeal to the mass audience and SPLINTER is as smart as it is grusome.  Without a question an absolute MUST SEE film.
