When I watched SAW V in the theater I came out of the experience feeling that the whole SAW thing had finally run its course. The storyline seemed forced and with the notable exception of the very well done traps the film lacked any "heart".
Watched it on DVD last night and I'm glad to say that SAW V plays much better on DVD then it did in the multi-plex. I found myself actually kind of enjoying the viewing as I think I was actually able to kind of follow the very conveluted and strange storyline.
I guess in a strange kind of way where they are heading with the SAW saga is really the only place they can go. They have killed off all the principal characters from the earlier films. We are left with only Detective Hoffman and Jigsaw's wife neither of which played any importance inthe first few films to carry on the JIGSAW way of teaching morality.
Oh yes, and we are also left with the traps. Let's face it folks, that is what we tune in for, the traps. SAW V doesn't disappoint on that front. This selection of bizzare torture devices are among the best I've seen. The last one being particularly disturbing but all being sick, twisted and entertaining.
Another great reason to watch this DVD is to just stare at Julie Benz. She's a hottie and has kind of quetly become horrors newest sex symbol. Love her on DEXTER where she often gets very naked. Loved her in the new RAMBO flick and love her is SAW V. Here's a hot little pic of her in case you don't know who she is:
All the SAW films have looked good and this one is no different. LIONSGATE isn't afraid to throw some money at these films. They've done well for the studio and even though SAW V underperformed the earlier chapters in franchise it still did very well.
I was annoyed though at the continued attempts to instill the Hoffman character into the early segment of the series and making it so that Amanda knew nothing of his partnership with JIGSAW. The flashbacks were silly and strange and actually really unnecessary.
So as this chapter closes we are left with another handful of unanswered questions and with the certainty that even though JIGSAW is gone his legacy will live on as Hoffman continues his sick twisted lessons. They might actually be able to turn the page in this franchise if they quit flashing back and attempting to show Tobin Bell setting things up. Hoffman is Jigsaw now, move on please.
The DVD itself is done with the usual handiwork that LIONSGATE always brings to the table. The mandatory commentary tracks are well done and entertaining and the behind the scenes stuff is broke up by the trap so you can go in depth with each puzzle and see how it was concieved and executed. I enjoyed those segments a lot.
Overall I would have to say that I really enjoyed the DVD presentation of SAW V and would have to reccomend at least picking it up as a rental. If you've collected all the others in the seres then picking this one up is a slam dunk.
I'm sure we'll be talking about SAW VI very soon.
