Dark, scary and full of surprises, QUARANTINE is a must see DVD.  An American remake of the film (REC) this version features Jennifer Carpenter who genre fans should recognize from THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE and more currently from Show time's DEXTER.

Uber talented and hot as hell Jennifer has a friendly girl next door vibe going for her (think Sandra Bullock) that makes her instantly likable and raises the caliber of any project that she is in.

In QUARANTINE she portrays a reported who is embedded with a local fire squad.  The film is shot first person "Cloverfield" style and we watch as Carpenter befriends and attempts to chronicle a day in the life of this firehouse.

Early on we see the fireman as they kill time waiting for the alarm to go off.  Then one night the alarm does go off and we get to follow along as they are called to an apartment complex where a report of screams from an apartment has come in.

From this point on the film gets a little difficult to watch as that always popular "herky-jerky" hand held style of film making is used.  This is really the type of film that this style of filming was made for but that doesn't make it any less difficult to watch.  Also from this point on the film gets very, very dark as in, very little light.  For us "older" horror fans this is never a good thing.  You're talking to a guy here who needs a flood light on so he doesn't miss the pisser when he goes to the bathroom.  Although very atmospheric, it's just plain old hard to see what the hell is going on most of the times.

Despite these petty problems the film still comes off as very creepy and quite scary.

Once in the apartment complex it doesn't take long for thing sto go to hell in a hand basket.  They enter the apartment where other tenants say screams where coming and they find an older women who is covered with blood and very disoriented.

And so it begins.

After a series of events the fire crew with the camera crew attached find themselves locked in the apartment complex.  When they attempt to escape they are shot and they find themselves trying to survive the horrific event unfolding inside all the while attempting to find out why the police and others outside will not let them out.

It becomes a cat and mouse game of hiding and fighting for survival that you will not soon forget.

The FX work of Robert Hall are nothing short of phenomenal and although they are mostly poorly lit what you do manage to see are breathtaking.

As a part of the special features package there is a short docu on the FX work, watch it and enjoy.  You get a much better look at all the fun goings on.

All in all I have to say that my viewing of QUARANTINE is some of the most fun I've had watching a horror movie this year.  I strongly recommend checking it out just as quickly as you can.

QUARANTINE is available now just about anywhere you look.
