The Phantasm series is an odd one and one that has intrigued and frightened me since I was but a wee lad.  I remember seeing the original in the theaters when I was maybe 14 or 15.  Angus strolling those mortuary halls and that damn brain drilling sphere were all we talked about at school for the next three months.

Although the films have stretched out over a few decades Coscarelli and crew have managed to somehow maintain a coherency that is as much fun as it is amazing.

Now don't get me wrong, I have never really gotten just exactly what the hell is going on in these films.  Dwarfs, zombies, time travel, hot chicks, zombie cops, spheres, yellow oozy stuff, it all plays important roles in the four films and I think that Coscarelli is the only one that know for sure exactly what the hell is going on.

He sure does make it look good though and that is the case with OBLIVION.  Exceptional camera work, stunning visuals and probably the best special effects of the films await you as you slip this disc into your player.  The characters personal journey to rid the world of THE TALL MAN reaches a boiling point and all the orginal cast returns for this BALLS OUT finale.

ANGUS SCRIMM is such a wonderful talented actor and he really is a true horror icon.  His portraly of THE TALL MAN has never wavered and he still scares the shit out of me yet today.  We are treated this time to also seeing him via flash backs and dreams the show that this battle has been going on for a long time and he truely does steal the show as he has always treated the character with a seriousness and revrence that few actors bother with for a horror film.

Such explains why the character is still so damn scary.

Full of vibrant, disturbing imagry PHANTASM OBLIVION is sure to please any PHAN but may prove just a bit confusing for those that have never watched the earlier films or perhaps haven't viewed them for a while.  Attempts are made to tie everything together but you really need to know your PHANTASM to truely appreciate some of the refrences.

Fact remains though, if you just want to see some really cool horror imagry and maybe even jump out of your seat once or twice then PHANTASM OBLIVION will still accomplish the task even if you don't know what the hell is going on.

Actually I think a line in the film best describes everything:

SEEING IS EASY BUT UNDERSTANDING TAKES TIME.

Pretty much wraps it up in a nutshell.

Anchor Bay does it usual kick ass job of presenting, packaging and showcasing the film.  All of the ANCHOR BAY COLLECTION discs are fine additions to your collection and this one is no exception.

Here is the official word on the disc from Anchor Bay:
