After much screaming from fans, Warner Brothers has finally decided to release three of the most memorable made-for-TV films of the 1970's on their DVD-R and digital download site, Warner Archive.  The films are now available, and while they have not been put through the rigors of a true video remastering, they are all worth owning for their own artistic merits.

First up is the inimitable DON'T BE AFRAID FOR THE DARK, which aired on ABC-TV on October 10, 1973.  Starring Kim Darby, this is one of the most entertaining and creepiest movies of the era, about a couple living in a new house with some strange creatures.

This film is being remade by Troy Nixie starring Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes and is scheduled for a 2011 release.

ABC-TV's BAD RONALD from October 23, 1974 is a creepy tale loosely based upon the novel of the same name by John Holbrook Vance.  Scott Jacoby stars as the titular antihero who, through an unfortunate circumstance, is forced to secretly live in his house without anyone knowing it.  Those of you who saw this film at an impressionable young age can now own it.

THE BERMUDA DEPTHS is my own personal favorite.  ABC-TV originally aired this romance/adventure film on January 27, 1978 and it was reported to be the highest-rated TV movie up to that point.  The best-looking of the three, this film possesses some beautiful day-for-night shots and underwater imagery filmed in Bermuda.

Connie Sellecca stars as a mysterious young woman who is the object of affection of Magnus (Leigh McCloskey), a troubled young man who is haunted by the memories of his father's death some years earlier.  A combination of JAWS, STAR WARS, and "The Twilight Zone," THE BERMUDA DEPTHS has been found on the bootleg circuit for years, all stemming from a pre-recorded VHS release from CK Entertainment in 1992.  Those of us who are used to this version will be stunned by the transfer on the new Warner DVD-R - the definition and rich colors that were desaturated on the bootleg have been restored.

A petition was created some years back to get THE BERMUDA DEPTHS released on DVD by Anchor Bar Entertainment, though since Warner Brothers has purchased the film there is little chance of another company releasing a special edition of it.

Go to the Warner Archive for trailers on these three films.
