The road to FEAR ITSELF is a strange one, at least to me.

After two successful seasons on Showtime MICK GARRIS and company moved their popular series MASTERS OF HORROR to NBC and gave it the title FEAR ITSELF.  Actually Mick Garris kind of removed himself from the project right before the move.  It was confusing and I don't know that anyone other then those involved know the whole truth about it but long story short MOH was gone on cable and FEAR ITSELF was a go on NBC.

The show aired on Thursday nights at 10 PM, at least that's where it started, I think they moved it around a bit after the first few weeks but it hit and vanished pretty quick.  Luckily LIONSGATE has made the shows available on DVD and we can all see what we had been missing.

The episodes are actually pretty good.  I found myself enjoying most and the feel and tone of the hour long tales of terror were along the same lines that the MASTERS OF HORROR episodes brought us.

Same with production values and the like.  They really don't seem to have missed a beat in their switch to prime time TV as I found most of the episodes to have the same creative hard edge that the Showtimes series had.  Sure maybe they couldn't spew the cuss words or show some boobage but none of that really effects if it is a good story or not.

The disc contains 13 episodes which includes five unaired episodes.  Each installment has a "Recipe for Fear" making of featurette that includes cast and crew interviews and behind the scenes info.  Four of the episodes are "Directors Cuts".

A few of the MASTERS OF HORROR directors came along for the ride including STUART GORDON, JOHN LANDIS and ROB SCHMIDT.  Also featured are RONNIE YU (Freddy vs. Jason), MARY HARRON (American Psycho) and DARREN LYNN BOUSMAN (Saw IV) just to name a handful.

Overall I've got to say that I really enjoyed this box set.  A nice mix of tales, very well acted for the most part.  As I mentioned above, production value is verry high.  I think most would have a hard time separating a FEAR ITSELF segment from a MASTERS OF HORROR segment.

The packaging on FEAR ITSELF is pretty cool albeit a little on the flimsy side.  You have to be kind of careful with it as it seems it would be very easy to break but sitting on a shelf, it looks cool.

I think FEAR ITSELF got a bad rap for being on network TV and the way the franchise left SHOWTIME kind of left a bad taste in some fans mouths but give this a chance, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

FEAR ITSELF is available now anywhere you buy your DVD's.
