This is the time of year when cinephiles and industry alike head to Park City, Utah for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival to celebrate the best in independent film and enjoy the majestic views that Park City has to offer.
If you are lucky enough to be going this year and are a fan of horror then you might want to check out the following films:
DEAD SNOW (Directed by Tommy Wirkola)
(Norway, 2008, 91 mins., color) Cast Vegard Hoel, Stig Frode Henriksen, Charlotte Frogner, Jenny Skavlan, Jeppe Beck Laursen and Lasse Valdal
I have to say that out of all the films showing at Sundance this year this is the one I am most excited about. A group of medical students on a vacation run into nazi zombies. Say no more my friend, I've already bought the tickets and the popcorn. I'm just wondering where the hell you're at! Word is this one has enough blood and guts to keep even the most hardcore gorehound happy. Director Tommy Wirkola has seemingly mastered the art of combining nazi horror, humor, snow and the promiscuity of young medical students on vacation. Take that Michael Bay!
Screening Times:
Sat. Jan 17 11:59 p.m. - Egyptian Theatre, Park City
Wed. Jan 21 9:30 p.m. - Redstone Cinemas, Kimball Junction
Fri. Jan 23 11:59 p.m. - Egyptian Theatre, Park City
Sat. Jan 24 10:30 p.m. - Broadway Centre Cinemas IV, SLC
GRACE (Directed by Paul Solet)
(U.S.A., 2008, 85 mins., color) Cast: Jordan Ladd, Samantha Ferris, Gabrielle Rose, Malcom Stewart, Stephen Park and Serge Houde
Madeline Matheson is eight months pregnant and insists upon an at home delivery with a midwife. When an unfortunate and tragic turn of events leaves the unborn baby dead inside of her she decides that baby Grace will be carried to term, alive and well. This, of course, doesn't come without a few consequences. Look, I never said it was a kneeslapper but do you really want it to be? A lot can be said for the horror film that slowly creates an atmosphere of tension and fright. A movie you can lose yourself in, without relying upon yet another bland and generic hottie from the CW network running around in her panties trying to get to the bottom of a mystery nobody truly gives a shit about. Plus, Sundance wrote that Director Paul Solet "assuredly approaches the medium, displaying a cocksure confidence in his construction of this modern horror fable". Folks, you can't get a better endorsement.
Screening Times:
Fri. Jan 16 11:59 p.m. - Egyptian Theatre, Park City
Sat. Jan 17 6:30 p.m. - Redstone Cinemas, Kimball Junction
Thu. Jan 22 noon - Egyptian Theatre, Park City

THE KILLING ROOM (Directed by Jonathan Liebesman)
(U.S.A., 2008, 90 mins., color) Cast: Chloe Sevigny, Peter Stormare, Clea DuVall, Timothy Hutton, Nick Cannon and Shea Whigham
This falls under the category of a psychological drama but it is surrounded by horrific events and an intriguing premise. A group of volunteers take part in a paid research study. As you would have guessed not everything is what it seems and it becomes known that the "paid research study" is really a sadistic and brutal government experiment. Subjects who fail the tests are "taken out" of the study and soon the night becomes an endurance test in which the remaining participants need to survive.
