Though predictable and familiar by now, AND SOON THE DARKNESS, a remake of the 1970 British film of the same name, is a cut above similarly themed yarns about the infamous sex trafficking issue that plagues poor countries as a lucrative means of surviving and manages suspense during the film's final reel.

Amber Heard, fresh from ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE, ZOMBIELAND, and THE STEPFATHER, gives a compelling performance as Stephanie, a woman whose friend Ellie (Odette Yustman) is kidnapped while they are on a class trip to Argentina.  Why two attractive young women would branch off by themselves in a rural country where language is an issue is anyone's guess, but it is perhaps attributed to the notion that when you're young, you're invincible.

The concierge (Adriana Barraza) greets Ellie (Odette Yustman) and Stephanie (Amber Heard) in AND SOON THE DARKNESS.

Adriana Barraza, the Oscar-nominated actress from BABEL, appears briefly as a concierge at the Hotel Rosemaria that the women are staying at, and her husband is a creepy and suspicious-looking red herring.  After a few drinks and a flirtatious dance with a town local at an outdoor bar, Ellie lands in trouble with him.  The next morning they miss their bus to a rendezvous and venture out on their own, sunning themselves in bikinis in Villa Del Lago, a ghost town, off of a deserted road which, as anyone who watches horror films knows, es mala idea.

Ellie (Odette Yustman) gets in over her head in AND SOON THE DARKNESS.

After a brief argument, Stephanie storms off and leaves Ellie alone, and the latter is kidnapped.  When it becomes clear that Ellie is missing, Stephanie seeks help from the local police, who is less than helpful and unceremoniously goes through the motions of filing a missing persons report.

Stephanie (Amber Heard) knows that something is amiss in AND SOON THE DARKNESS.

Anyone can see the ending from this point, but the film's final reel manages to make the action suspenseful.

The disc comes with an entertaining commentary from various crew members and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
