After just watching Tom Six's THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE I can without a doubt tell you that I've just witnessed what is in my opinion the best single performance in a horror film this year.
Dieter Lasar, remember that name. This dude is a madman. What an amazing, over the top, creepy performance. From the moment you see this guy on screen you can't stop watching him. He demands your attention. Dieter plays Dr. Heiter an amazingly gifted whack job whose claim to fame is that when he was a practicing doctor he specialized in separating conjoined twins. Now he lives a secluded life and he has become obsessed with creating a new life form, the Human Centipede.
Once introduced to Dr. Heiter we meet the rest of the players in the warped little tale. Two American tourists, both female while on the road searching for a nightclub have a breakdown and find themselves at the door of Dr. Heiter where, a great scene unfolds and the madness that is this flick quickly unfolds.
I can't spoil it for you but I don't think it's giving to much away as the film has gotten so much press to tell you that the doctors creation involves joining three people together mouth to anus. Yep, that's right.
The last two thirds of the film is a non stop barrage of bizarreness. Words really can't do justice to what goes down. What is amazing is the graceful way that director Tom Six handles the controversial subject matter by showing just enough to set the stage but never really crossing that line into perverseness.
I literally could not look away once this one ramped up. You have to see how it ends once you start watching and the great thing is, THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE delivers. The ending is as twisted and unexpected as the rest of the film and I applaud Tom Six for bringing horror fans a horrific, uncompromising, unsettling tale of human madness and how the things we need to fear the most are often times the things that happen around us.
A brilliant movie and a performance by Dieter Lasar that seriously should be Oscar worthy. He is every bit as disturbing to watch as Anthony Hopkins was playing Hannibal Lector.
THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
IFC has done a great job on the disc itself. I enjoyed the special features and appreciated the behind the scenes stuff cause once you see this one, you just have to know how they did it.
