I’m kicking my self in the ass as I sit here writing this review. I missed Supernatural when it was airing on the WB this past season. I actually watched part of the pilot when it aired and that was pretty much it. I don’t know if it is because it aired while something else I watched was on or what but you know what? I should have been watching Supernatural instead. This show blows me away.
The complete first season of Supernatural is coming out on DVD on Tues. Sept. 5th Surprisingly scary and edgy Supernatural is kind of like Kolchak: The Night Stalker for this generation. The pilot episode wraps you in quickly with an interesting story line, good acting and top notch special effects, all the elements to make a genre fan proud. As the series proceeds the production standards remain high and the writing is strong which for a genre show can at times be an issue but that is not the case here. They are spending a little money on this show and it shows in the final product. and should be one box set that you seek out and purchase.
So, what’s it all about you ask?
Some light spoilers ahead but nothing that will ruin the show for you.
As we are introduced to Supernatural we meet a husband and wife with young children who have turned in for the night. Mom is tucking in the baby; dad is asleep in front of the TV. A typical night in America. The mother wakes suddenly to the nursery monitor with sounds of the baby fussing in the night, she rolls over to see if hubby might take care of it this time and notices that hubby has already gotten up and kind of smiles to herself. She heads to the babies room and while on the way the hall light starts flickering. Concerned she stops and messes with the bulb, it quits flickering and she proceeds into the babies’ room where she sees her husband bent over the crib taking care of things. Again she smiles to herself and leaves the room to let dad take care of things. As she wanders the house she comes across dad still asleep in front of the TV and promptly freaks out running back to the babies room. We hear the mother scream which wakes up dad. He runs to the Childs room where nothing appears to be wrong. The baby is lying in crib smiling and cooing. Dad looks down at the child, gently rub his face when he feels something dripping onto his face and neck, he wipes it away to discover that it is blood. He looks up to find his wife stuck to the ceiling over top the crib. Mom screams and bursts into flames. Well, they got my attention!!
An older brother enters the room and dad hands off the baby telling older brother to run like hell and get out of the house. They barely make it out before mom explodes, destroying the house. Dad and sons escape. We then jump forward 20 or so years. The younger brother has a girlfriend, a hot girlfriend I might add and is preparing to take a law test that will set up his future. Suddenly older brother shows up and everything changes.
This is how we are introduced to the 2 main characters played very well by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
It turns out that dad has suddenly disappeared and the brother must reunite to find him. Since Mom’s interesting death Dad has been hunting down whatever may have caused it. Dad has become a paranormal investigator and it seems that he may have stumble onto something that has either hurt or killed him. This storyline sets up the boys traveling across the county in search of dad going from one supernatural event to another, helping people and finding clues to where the hell their dad is along the way.
This 6 disc collection offers up all 22 episodes of Season One. WB really knows how to put out shows on DVD. The packaging is the same excellent standard that they have set with their Tales from the Crypt DVD releases. The extras included on the disc lend to even more fun. We have commentaries for select episodes and a couple of featurettes that are pretty cool. Also a gag reel and some unaired and extended scenes. For those of you with DVD-ROM capabilities you get web access to some exclusive content.
All in all a great package. A great show with great extras, what more could you ask for?
I know one thing for sure, when Supernatural Season Two comes around, I’ll be watching.
Head out Tuesday Sept. 5th and get your hands on this series. You won’t be sorry.
