If this film was called anything other than CREEPSHOW most fans would probably not have a problem with it but since the folks at Taurus Entertainment managed to buy up the rights to the popular Romero/King franchise we find ourselves looking at a new segment in that franchise that falls way short of the expectations of fans.
Without the input of any of the principals from the first two films CREEPSHOW 3 ends up being a very weak addition in the CREEPSHOW legacy and that really is a shame as the film itself is not really a bad little indie film. The special effects are actually pretty decent. Gone is the EC comics feel replace instead by a silly wrap around story featuring a professor and a freeze and whipe effect that guides us through the individual stories.
The acting is pretty bad, actually laughable at points but in the context of the project you really don’t expect much more. As I stated above this films major problem is that the producers chose to use the CREEPSHOW name and making what is basically a low budget indie film. If the film had been released on its own merits with a none classic title I think it might of actually had a chance to attract an audience as it is the film just comes off as a cheap joke and makes it look like those involved are pretty much just ripping off Romero and Co.
Much like their DAY OF THE DEAD sequel released a few years ago Taurus has produced a Romero related project that fans have pretty much universally turned their back on. It really isn’t fair to the director and actors and crew of the project as they are being compared to major Hollywood films that this project never had a chance to be. While I can understand the business sense of buying the classic names like CREEPSHOW and DAY OF THE DEAD I really can’t understand releasing sub par films as it pretty much ruins that franchise and ends your chance at releasing any further projects under that moniker.
This is the same company that is behind the DAY OF THE DEAD remake that Steve Miner has directed and Ving Rhames has starred in. Based on what I have seen in CREEPSHOW 3 I’m not expecting much.
So, what’s the bottom line on CREEPSHOW 3? It’s a good looking and at times mildly entertaining film that is pretty much going to bomb because those in charge decided to attach it to a franchise with a rabid fan base in which the first two films are considered classics and then releasing what is basically an indie horror film that has nothing to do with the original source material.
Don’t pick up CREEPSHOW 3 expecting the same fun and games as the first two. It’s kind of like buying a Hershey bar, unwrapping it and finding out it’s a turd. All Taurus Entertainment is managing to do is cement the name of their company in fans minds as “that company that rips off Romero films”. Quite a legacy.
CREEPSHOW 3 is available now.
