Minor Spoilers...
Regardless of what you think of the SAW films the one thing you can’t take away from the franchise is their ability to take the formula that they invented and tweak it ever so slightly to create a familiar although not completely copied new version of themselves.
I loved the original SAW. I did not see that ending coming at all, it really floored me. The second one seemed a little forced to me and although good it didn’t quite have the draw that the first one had for me. I was kind of concerned on where the third film would take us and I am happy to report that SAW III delivers the goods.
This time around JIGSAW and company have taken on an even darker and bloodier turn as a new series of sinners are given a shot at redemption by our little bicycle riding freak. The difference this time around is that the film centers much more on Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda. It seems that JIGSAW has one final game to play and as always is the case with these films, nothing is at it seems on the surface.
You have to pay attention this time around as the film does jump around quite a bit as every attempt is made to wrap all the films together into one nice tidy little package Through these flashbacks we learn much more of the backstory of Jig and Amanda and we also learn more and more of how the current cast of characters play into the whole mess.
It is confusing but if you manage to keep it all straight the payoff at the end is well worth it. By now we all expect the big shocking surprise ending and I really felt that they missed the mark a bit in SAW II but this time around they hit the nail straight on the head and deliver a hard hitting, rather shocking ending. Of course they leave the possibility of SAW 4.
The torture this time around is nasty, I mean nasty. We have all kinds of creative bloodletting and I found myself wincing on more then one occasion. Most of the characters from the previous 2 films manage to show up at one point or another and it is kind of cool to see how they wrap it all up and you really come away with a feeling for how much time and effort these two wack jobs expend to bring pain and suffering to those they deem unworthy of living.
The DVD package itself is great. Special features galore and as always with a LIONSGATE release it is all top notch and more than worth your time and money. Here are all the disc specs for the release:
