Movies
affect me and I like it. I'm glad I have never been one of those people
who falls asleep in a theater, or constantly looks at their watch or
picks those two hours to catch up on cell phone calls to friends.
Whether at home or in a theater I dive in and experience it and along
the way I run into some moments I feel I must share, these are a few. Lonely Hearts (2006)
This
little seen movie based on a true story is definitely worth a look. I'm
not a huge Jared Leto fan but he really knocked me out as con man
killer Ray Fernandez. Equally as good is his 'girl Friday' Martha Beck
played by Salma Hayek. There is a scene involving a '3 way' between
them and a hapless victim that was on my mind days after I saw it.
Also, a certain body discovered in a trunk will chill you to the bone.
Seriously.
Black Christmas (1974)
P.O.V type camera work
in a horror movie always gets to me and "Black Christmas" delivers A
LOT of chills down your spine. So what part really gets to me? The
ending, of course! If you have seen it you know what I mean, if you
haven't, you must! But, as a personal favor to me see this version, the
original. Go ahead, go, I'll wait.
Session 9 (2001)
To
me, this movie is one of those movies that will become a classic. It
gets in your head and really fucks with you. This movie is a Sunday
buffet of creepy moments but the audio 'sessions' between Mary Hobbes
and her doctor really stand out. As the tapes play you get to know Mary
and her many personalities. I made the mistake of watching this one in
the dark.... At home.... Alone. Call me a wimp but after the movie was
over it took an episode of "Three's Company" to give me the courage to
get up and turn on a light. Something about Jack Tripper makes me feel
safe, what can I say?
Blair Witch Project (1999)
There
is an old Chris Rock joke where he said this movie cost $22,000.00 to
make and that someone was walking around with $21,500.00 of that money
in their pocket. Funny, but it works. Having unknown actors using their
own names in the movie didn't hurt either to up the chill factor ante.
The creepiest part though? The final scene, going down the stairs to
the basement. Bloody little hand prints and then the camera dropping to
the floor, showing a character facing the corner. I don't even have to
watch the whole movie to give me the chills; just watching this end
scene does it every time.
Misery (1990)
I saw this in
the theater with my sister and we were completely creeped out by Kathy
Bates. She was born to play the role of Annie Wilkes. It is one of
those performances where you cannot imagine anyone else playing the
character. The moment she realizes author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is
getting well enough to leave she decides to make it so he cannot. This
scene had people groaning and cringing in the theater but it made for a
great movie moment. The reaction, that moment, THAT is why we go to the
movies.
Wolf Creek (2005)
I KNOW that if I went to John
Jarratt's house I would find dead bodies buried in the walls. That guy
has got to be a real killer in order to play one this well. I have seen
this movie a dozen times but I STILL say to the TV screen "Don't leave
your car there! Just keep driving!". Creepy doesn't really begin to
cover this movie, heartbreaking is more like it but the "Head On a
Stick" scene does it to me every time. At that point the viewer loses
hope. Freddy, Jason and Michael Myers have their places but Mick Taylor
is a guy, no snappy one liners, no hockey masks. Just one human
gleefully inflicting pain and suffering on other humans.
The Shining (1980)
There
are certain elements to a movie that get under my skin and make me
completely mental. Dolls, clowns and..twins. My blood chills when I see
the Grady twins inviting Danny Torrance to play with them. One would
have been enough but throw in an identical second girl and for me it's
like "Check, please!". Speaking of Grady, the discussion between him
and Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) about how Grady had to "Correct" his
girls made me want to crawl under a giant comforter and stay there.
We
all have our own movie moments that creep us out, these are a few of
mine and I have many more, go revisit yours. Until next time.....
