Justice League
Another DC offering, Justice League is another favorite in Asia including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. Sadly, this movie flopped at the box office over the opening weekend with a domestic total of only $96 million, the lowest opening of any DC Comics Extended Universe release.
Justice League 2 was scheduled to be released in 2019, but this all changed after the release of Batman v Superman. Now fans of the Justice League can look forward to Justice League: The Snyder Cut, which will premiere on HBO Max in 2021.
Joker
Yet another DC movie, clearly Asia favors DC over Marvel, Joker is the most popular superhero movie in countries including Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Mongolia. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, this movie is the Joker’s first stand-alone origin story, and unlike most superhero movies, it does not contain many laughs.
That said, due to its relatively small budget, Joker is now the most profitable comic book film of all time, grossing $1.074 billion at the box office with a budget of only $55-70 million.
Captain Marvel
Voted the number one super hero movie in 7 different countries in Asia including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines, Captain Marvel is the first Marvel movie on the list of top superhero movies in Asia.
Starring Brie Larson, Captain Marvel was the first female-led superhero in the Marvel Universe. This movie grossed $1.128 billion at the box office, making it Marvel’s seventh biggest hit.
For fans of this character, Captain Marvel 2 is set to fly into theatres in July 2022.
Black Panther
Loved in a whopping 10 Asian countries including South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Afghanistan, Jordan and Qatar, this Marvel movie made $1.344 billion at the box office.
One of the first mega budget movies to not only have a predominantly black cast but also an African American director, this movie was not afraid to tackle issues head on and did so in a way that was hugely entertaining.
The highly anticipated sequel, Black Panther 2, is set to be released in May 2022.
