Prince of Darkness (1987) Review:
Prince of Darkness is probably one of its top 5 horror movies by John Carpenter, who is himself often considered as the best director in horror in history.
The story, written by Carpenter himself, is great and very cleverly told. It tells, in a very religious atmosphere, a worrying tale of the battle of good versus evil. Unlike most possession movies that would just have stated that the object contains evil as a fact, here we are in presence of a bunch of scientist who have to convince themselves of it and, as they face the improbable truth, the viewer himself also gets convinced of it.
The first half of the movie is slow paced. Without adding much background to the characters, it takes nevertheless 30 min for everyone to gather in the place where everything is happening. Luckily, if you get past that, you’re sure to be hooked as the story unfolds and people starts to get murdered and possessed. This movie that started as a light and funny 90’ tale gets increasingly dark and macabre, inevitably heading toward its terrifying climax.
I always like the ending of Carpenter’s movie and this one no exception. Prince of Darkness is a great church vs devil movie and easily one of the best horror films of the 90’s.
