 Pandorum (2009)Review:

By the director of Case 39Pandorum is one of the greatest alternative to the Alien series to be found. I like the comparison because the two movies because the former obviously takes its inspiration from Alien: the look of the spaceship, the story of a spaceship crew waking up from hypersleep without knowing why, the ship filled with deadly creature, the pursuits, etc. The creature themselves are however different from Alien and closer to punk-like zombies from futuristic-splatters such as Ghosts of Mars or Doomsday. In any case, they are superb!

The story is elaborated, well-written and brings some good surprises. It is also well complemented by a detailed science fiction background where little things such as the hypersleep suits, the x-ray shaving machine, the biosphere lab helps to increase the movie’s credibility. The space ship set is also well designed, with the action happenings in lots of breathtaking locations such as vents filled with cables, huge futuristic labs, etc.

The only drawback for me was the lack of tension, with Pandorum having more the feeling of an action movie like Pitch Black, rather than a suspense movie. On the other hand, it has the advantage of having a great story filled with cool characters and great-looking monsters, making it worthy of the best sci-fi horror movies ever made.
