Maniac Cop 3 (1993) Review:

Maniac Cop 3 picks up the story where the second movie left it, for the worst. Whereas the first two movies felt like one big movie, this third opus really feels like a cheap downgrade of the franchise. It is not really different in terms of atmosphere, for Matt Cordell is still evolving in the treacherous New York that we got to like in the first movies, but the storytelling is a lot less interesting here, and Maniac Cop 3 feels longer and slower than its predecessors.

The focus of the movie seems to have shifted away from Matt Cordell to a religious cult instead. After the first two movies used up the original concept to the bone, such a change was inevitable, but somehow I was hoping for more here. Why is it that virtually every franchise becomes crap after 3 or so sequels?

Cordell is not using is baton anymore, but instead kills with a whole range of tools from the hospital. While this an interesting attempt to bring some change in the franchise, it also removed the fun and the scary aspect of Maniac Cop and feels more like every other slasher movies.

After two great movies, this third sequel really came as a huge disappointment.
