Goosebumps (2015) Review:
As many of you, I grew up addicted to reading Goosebumps books (The Haunted Mask was my favorite by the way) – and it is with huge anticipation that I went to see that movie. Not surprisingly, nostalgia grabbed me very quickly – the movie is quite faithful to the books, firstly because the filmmakers found a clever way to combine all the book stories in one, but also because the atmosphere is very like the books: child-oriented but super-entertaining.
In many ways, Goosebumps is pretty much the new The Monster Squad… something that I cannot wait to show to my kids. Of course, it doesn’t have the greatest story and somehow I was expecting something a little more twisted than this very linear scenario. But R.L. Stine (the writer of the books, who appear briefly in the movie) didn’t write the scenario, so that was to be expected. The set of solid actors fit with the movie completely, but I feel like it could have been slightly less cheesy, even for children.
I guess one thing I didn’t dig too much was the humorous aspect, definitely too kid-oriented. But anyway, Goosebumps is definitely a “feel-good” movie and the perfect movie to watch with your kids on Halloween – just maybe not one I’ll want to watch twice.
