Goodnight Mommy (2015) Review:
We don’t get to hear much about Austrian horror movies, but this about to change. After the excellent Blood Glacier last year, it is Goodnight Mummy which puts the country on the front-page this year.
The movie is a horrific psychological thriller about twins who believe their mother isn’t their mother. Thereee is also a fascinating mystery about whether one of the boy is dead or not. Both mysteries evolves in parallel and together create a huge suspense. The movie gradually escalade until the tension becomes almost unbearable. The final climax left me quite speechless.
The movie is really beautiful too. The shots are really picturesque and always very elaborated, playing a lot on important details and suggestion. The movie has this cold Scandinavian feeling (even though it’s Austrian) and slow pace that makes it stand out from your usual horror movie. But don’t worry, it also has a lot of skin crawling moments.
I might have heard read too many good reviews of that movie before watching it because I was a little disappointed at the all experience at first, but looking back at it, this was easily the best psychological thriller of the year so far.
