RE: 90's Horror

First, I'd like to offer major kudos to your site. I've been following it's evolution for several months now,and would say that it is THE definitive site for those seeking behind the scenes info and thoughtful reviews of horror films. Many of the films listed in your favorites section hold a special place in my heart as well as my video collection.

The one thing I can't seem to grasp, though, is your seeming utter contempt for the film "Scream". This film, IMHO, revitalized horror in the 90's. True, it was not the most original of slasher films, in fact it was conciously derivitive of nearly every silly teenage-cutiepie-being-stalked -by-a-knife-wielding-maniac film ever made. The fact that the characters are completely aware of the conventions of the modern horror movie make it not just a hack and slach clone of Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc., but brings a refreshing new twist to the genre. I also found it interesting (and quite horrifying) that the killers in the film seemed incredibly detached from the carnage up until they met their end, as if none of their actions were real, but only part of horror flick.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to trash your opinion for not liking the film. But I would like to see the same type of in depth review of "Scream" that you have given to many other films which have shaped the face of the modern horror. Because, like it or not, "Scream" has been a major influence on modern horror films. In other words, I know you didn't like it, but I'd really like to know why.

Keep up the good work,

Greg

RE: Groovy Web Page

This is one of the greatest horror movie sites on the entire web. When I discovered your site, I was immediately pleased to see someone that loves modern classic horror movies as much as I do (i.e. Dawn of the Dead, Zombie, Evil Dead I and II, etc.). The coolest feature on this site is the fact that your commentary is fresh and to the point on every occasion; not like the usual mainstream critic who downs horror films most of the time. That's all I got; keep this page groovy from dusk till dawn every day and all the time, I'm outta here.

RE: Signed in blood

This site was recommended to me by a friend of mine for the Blackest Heart Media link, but when I checked out the House of Horrors proper I must say I was thoroughly kicked in the ass. What a cool site! I like the mix of well-known and not-so-well- known films reviewed. In fact, I just went out and rented an old (ie, in a giant cardboard box) copy of Make Them Die Slowly after hearing about it from here.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of slasher flicks (Freddy, Jason, whatever). I dig the gore but I'd rather be scared in other ways...my favorite horror flicks are Hellraiser & Hellraiser II, and Candyman. Clive Barker would be my fave horror-maker (in fact I met him a couple years ago in Chicago at a book-signing and had him autograph my Lord of Illusions theater poster--it's just awesome!).

Other examples of the horror movies I favor would include Event Horizon, the first Alien (superb mixing of horror and sci-fi, while the rest were simply sci-fi action), the Universal horror classics (ya just gotta love 'em!!), and the good old Hammer flicks, my favorite being The Satanic Rites of Dracula.

Speaking of which, thank god for some of these little companies like Anchor Bay, who are releasing newly-remastered, widescreen versions of great old formerly-hard-to-find horror movies, like the Hammer series, Evil Dead 2, and lots more. I just saw a copy of Fulci's Zombie at Media Play earlier today. It took forever, but we're now able to find respectable copies of our favorite genre flicks quite easily.

Well that's all for my babble.. Just wanted to let you know that I'm loving this site and hope to see it continue to grow! Cheers!

RE: THIS SITE IS WAY BOSS!!!

Bonjour!

I just wanted to say, from one horror fan to another, that your website totally rocks! Not to sound too corny but, if this site were a person, I'd want to marry it-- that's how much I love it! Thanks for sharing your great page with us all!

Au revoir, mon ami! :)

RE: Your site and horror films

Your site kicks major ass! As avid horror fans, my brother and I visit here often to get our fix of horror images, sounds, and info (which is my favorite part of your site). With the success of recent horror movies as Scream I and II, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the rise of horror themed video games such as Resident Evil I and II, horror is coming back in a big way. Hopefully this trend will continue, and horror junkies like us can look forward to sitting in a dark theater scared out of our wits. Personally, I'm a zombie fiend and getting my fix is harder than ever. Besides finding new foreign films (like Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, and Lucio Fulci's Zombie films) there's nothing new coming out. Where's George Romero when you need him? And why can't we get a showing of the remastered The Beyond here in Louisville? Anyway, keep up the good work with this site, and thanks for all the work you put into it. It really shows.

RE: I have been enjoying horror movies all my life.

I remember one of the first horror movies I saw was over at my friend's house when I was nine or ten. I was "Dawn of the Dead." I just was so amazed that films like these exist. I have always been a fan of graphic violence and watching movies like these made me resist the urge to go out and kill people I didn't like too well. I then rented Evil Dead 2 like six months later, it was interesting because it seemed to add to the film by not only having excessive gore factor but adding a slapstick element too. Now nine years later I have gotten back into horror again and I saw "The Beyond" at the Tivoli. I just really am now starting to really love horror films again and with this web site I can see what I've been missing for too long. Thanks.
