The new FRIDAY THE 13th film fails on just about as many levels as it succeeds. Being able to call this one good or bad is tough as it does have a couple things going for it but there are also some very major problems along the way that are actually pretty unforgivable.
Overall I have to say that I for the most part enjoyed my time spent at Crystal Lake but not without a couple of groan inducing moments along the way.
There will be spoilers ahead so if you don't want to know anything about the film stop now. But. c'mon, it a freaking remake, you've seen it all before. These guys certainly brought nothing new to the table so actually, screw it, how can there be spoilers. Never mind.
Okay, the film opens with what was actually the end of the original classic. We join in with a young female running through the woods as we hear Mrs. Vorhees explaining about her son who drowned in the lake and today was his birthday. A fight ensues and Mrs. Vorhees looses her head, literally.
As the young girl escapes we see the legs of a young child as they stop at the death scene to pick up a locket and severed head of Mrs. Vorhees.
Flash forward to present day where a group of horny, good looking kids who are searching for a fabled pot patch on the banks of Crystal Lake, yeah a pot patch. I know.
As darkness approaches they set up camp and proceed to get naked and screw. Of course JASON shows up. At this point his is (as my buddies at DEAD PIT say) "tater sack Jason. No hockey mask yet.
One by one they are killed off with one girl actually being tied in a sleeping bag and hung over the campfire. Pretty nasty actually.
Now we flash forward another 6 weeks or so and the brother of one of the pot searchers shows up to try and find his sister.
This is where the supoosed "real" storyline for this film begins. We meet a whole other group of horny, good looking folks who will of course be one by one skewered, impaled, gouged, gored and pretty much sliced and diced.
Along the way JASON acquires his trademark Hockey Mask and the game is on.
So, what are the problems you ask? Most of them end up having to do with continuity. Some things happen that just really don't make a lick of sense. JASON showing up places that he just had no way of being. The certain scene that comes to mind is when he kills one of the pack by heaving an axe at him from aobut 50 feet and then not even 1 minute later shows up on a roof with his machette in hand. Damn, he's quick. There are moment after moment of these type of scenes. One or two you can maybe overlook but it really seems like they just really paid no attention to any sort of continuity as the story progresses.
The film has a hard R but surprsingly there is very little blood. The R must be for all the tits and sex. We see lots of boobs and have some pretty extended scenes of the youngsters happily humping away.
I viewed the film at a Midnight viewing on Thursday night and the place was packed. Probably the most full theater I had sat in for the last year or so and I have to say that the audience response was overwhelmingly favorable. They were laughing, cheering and jumping at all the right places and as I was leaving I overheard everyone saying how much they loved it and how they would be coming to see it again. Just what PLATINUM DUNES was hoping for I'm sure.
As an older fan of the franchise I would have to say that I am a little disappointed that actually no attempt was made to bring anything new to the story of JASON. This is basically just a condensed version of the first 4 films. It looks good. I loved the way it's lit and some of the shots of JASON are very iconic but overall it is a pretty empty film that just kind of stumbles from sex scene to sex scene so that JASON can show up and kill them.
The ending is exactly what you would expect it to be and of course sets up what will undoubtable a long series of sequels to the remake.
Overall, it looks great and those I watched it with seemed to enjoy every moment of it and I'm not sure that you can really ask for much more then that.
FRIDAY THE 13th is playing now pretty much everywhere so go check it out.
It is worth it just to see ladies like Willa Ford oh so very naked, check out below.
