Okay, viewing this movie you kind of have to put aside all your seething thoughts of “how can these bastards screw with the work of George Romero”. Fact is, they are not. Day of the Dead 2: Contagium is a sequel by name only. It has nothing to do what so ever with the original film. Kind of think of this film like Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Remember when that film came out and had nothing to do with the previous 2 films? No Michael Myers, No Haddonfield, well this film is kind of like that.
Imagine if you will an entire series of films titled Day of the Dead with the correct corresponding number afterwards that deal with that fateful day that the dead rose and attempted to conquer us all but told from different perspectives and points of view. I think, think mind you that is what the folks behind DOTD2 were thinking when they made this film. As a sequel or a prequel to the GAR original, well lets be blunt, it stinks. BUT, as a stand alone little indie horror film, it has some redeeming qualities.
Other sites around the net have been quick to punish this film for stinking up the Day of the Dead title. Well, lets face it, a lot of folks will pick this film up only because of that reason. The folks behind this project know that, they ain’t stupid. They are going to sell a lot of copies of this film because someone was smart enough to pick up the rights to the title. Just good business folks, deal with it. So, if we can, let’s forget about the fact that this is supposedly “another” Day of the Dead film, let’s just look at it as an indie zombie film.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about the film. First off, the make up FX in this project are good, at points real good. Some of the gags are actually pretty cool and are pulled off with a nice flare. As we all know, good SFX do not a good film make but I did find myself chuckling a few times at the blood squirting fun. How about the acting you ask? The acting is of the typical standard, some are good, others amazingly bad but over all I did not find myself cringing to often.
Remember what I told you, don’t think of this as a sequel, or a prequel to Romero’s work, it isn’t, not in any way shape or form. This is just another indie zombie flick, one with a bit higher production standards than most and with someone in the front office who knows how to market.
The same folks behind this film also own the rights to Creepshow now and if you have been following the genre at all recently you know that a Creepshow 3 is already in the works.
So, should you spend you hard earned money on Day of the Dead 2: Contagium? An interesting question with no easy answer. As I always tell you, don’t take my or anyone else’s word on any of this, check it out for yourself. If you don’t take it to seriously you may just end up enjoying it a bit.
Day of the Dead 2: Contagium hit store shelves today October 18th and is being released by Anchor Bay so you know the disc is going to look and sound great, with Anchor Bay that is just a given. The SRP on the disc is $19.98
