DVD Review: Slime City

An interesting piece of retro horror, Slime City is not for everyone.  Rooted squarely in 80’s splatter this film owes a lot to films like The Fly, ReAnimator, The Dead Next Door and just about every other horror film from back in the day.

Their really is very little “original” in Slime City but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have a blast watching it.  I was first introduced into the world of Greg Lamberson when earlier this year I read his novel Personal Demons.  I really enjoyed the novel and struck up a conversation with Greg which is when I learned that he had directed a film, yep you guessed it, Slime City.

Greg Lamberson is one screwed up dude, and I love it.  Don’t get me wrong, Slime City is really not that good of a film but what is great is the way that Lamberson so completely commits to the film.  He plays it straight and goes for the throat.  In the gore department he scores but most of the rest of the film is laughable.

The transfer on the DVD is, well let’s just say it leaves a little to be desired, lots of blemishes and the sound quality is poor at its best and at times almost incomprehensible.  I am sure that Shock-o-rama did the best they could with what they had to work with and they make up for the poor condition of the transfer by giving us some good special features that really do enhance the package.

The story is pretty much non existent and what plot does exist is pretty much in place only to lead us from one gore effect to the next.  Lamberson does his best to tie everything together, not that it matters, but he does try.  What we end up with is a gory little flick that is great to watch but don’t put this one in the DVD player and expect to be blown away by anything new, original or special just plan on having a few laughs and enjoying some balls out gore from back in the day when Savini ruled and blood flowed like champagne.
