Jan 26, 2006,

In 2000, Final Destination burst onto the film scene and made film goers stand up and take notice. In January 2003, the sequel, Final Destination 2, hoped to have the same affect on film goers as the highly successful first film did. For this film, David R. Ellis (Cellular) would be sitting in the director's chair using a screenplay written by, Jeffrey Reddidck (Final Destination), Eric Bress (The Butterfly Effect) and J. Mackye Gruber (The Butterfly Effect). The cast would consist of, A.J. Cook (Ripper, Wishmaster 3), Ali Larter (Final Destination, House On Haunted Hill), Michael Landes (Hart's War, Beacon Hill), Terrence Carson (U-571) and Tony Todd (Final Destination, Candyman).

Kimberly (A.J. Cook) and her friends are off for a road trip, but Kimberly suffers a horrific vision of a massive traffic accident and before she and her friends enter the highway, Kimberly freezes up and won't continue. This obviously causes quite a traffic jam, much to the annoyance of the vehicles behind her. That annoyance is soon replaced by relief, as the traffic jam participants are witness to the horrific accident that Kimberly envisioned. Death has once again lost some souls and thus begins a race for the survivors to save ass. Clear Rivers (Ali Larter), the soul survivor of the first encounter with 'Death' is currently housed in mental institution for her own safety, she is soon recruited to explain just what these survivors have done to 'Death's' plan and what they must do to survive.

A couple of interesting bits of trivia for this film are:

In the original film, many of the characters were named after black and white horror film stars or directors. For this film, character Kinberly Corman is named for famous director, Roger Corman.

When the principal character enters the sanitarium the words "Get them off me" can be heard coming from one of the cells. This is a reference to a lunatic (also imprisoned in an asylum) in Hellraiser II: Hellbound (1988), who carves himself up with a straight-razor because he suffers from a delusion that he is covered with bugs.

John Denver's, "Rocky Mountain High", the song that accompanied most of the deaths in the original film, plays in the elevator that Eugene and Nora enter, and in the Dentist office.

Now, as I said in my review for, Final Destination, I wasn't a willing participant in the first viewing, but came away highly entertained and impressed with that film's effort. I really loved Final Destination, so when Final Destination 2 was released to DVD, I drove my roomie up to the retail store to be sure she picked up the sequel. We ran home and popped the disc in, with me hoping against hope that this sequel wouldn't disappoint and it didn't! Sure, I tend to be snobby and unforgiving when it comes to modern horror films and sequels, they rarely live up to my hopes, but Final Destination 2 went beyond what I'd even hoped for. The film was and is a fun ninety minutes of mayhem and tense moments, the opening traffic accident makes one realize that every time they get behind the wheel, they are taking their own life into their hands. The deaths in this film are at times, shocking and totally over the top and what more could film fans that love death and destruction ask for? Once again, I'd not hesitate in recommending this effort to horror fans. Final Destination 2 fulfilled this film fan much more than I'd hoped for and now, with Final Destination 3 on the horizon, I may do my best to see this one in the theatre, but if not, the day it comes to DVD, I'll be sure to have a full tank of gas and some money in my pockets.

Final Destination 3 open nationwide in theaters on February 10th.
