Based on an early novel by Dean Koontz, Demon Seed is a strange combination of sci-fi and a love story....?!
Alex Harris (Fritz Weaver) and his wife, Susan (Julie Christie) are at a point in their marrigae where happiness appears to be a thing of the past. The couple lost their only child to leukemia and Alex has thrown himself into his work and basically alienated himself from his wife in the process. Alex is a genius and has developed a super-computer, Proteus. In addition to Proteus, the Harris home is basically run by computers. Alex leaves Susan alone, yet, again, for another long session at his lab and as a result of being left alone so often, Susan seems to find a sort of kinship with all the computers within the home and soon Proteus sets 'his' sights on Susan with plans of impregnating Susan with the perfect hybrid.....human and computer. Susan isn't too keen on this idea and Susan soon finds herself in a cat and mouse game against a computer that has set it sights on producing a 'child' that will rule the world.
Now, before you run off laughing hysterically at the premise of this film or think this is a Bill Gate's dream come true, this is a very solid film. Julie Christie really tackles the role of Susan Harris with all seriousness and makes the film seem very believable and not a laughable yawn-fest as some might think it would be or could be.
No, this may not be the sci-fi classic that many viewers are in search of, but this is one of those films that grabs your attention and holds your interest for the 94 minutes the film runs. It's not an effort to sit and watch it and once you've seen the film for the first time, you may find yourself revisiting it, again!
