Hills Takes 3rd in Weekend Box Office Race

Once again proving the powerful draw of the horror film (and lamentably in recent times, the horror remake), Alexandre Aja's take on Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes brought in an estimated $15.5 million over the March 10-12 weekend, taking third place just behind romantic comedy Failure to Launch and family film The Shaggy Dog. Given that that analysts initially estimated the film would take in $15 million, this news is definitely encouraging for the film's success.

Now, while I can't say that I'm entirely fond of there being yet another horror remake out there in the mix, the fact that at least a good horror remake is successful is more than encouraging, particularly in the face of it's troubles with the MPAA and still rather harsh subject matter.  I personally enjoyed Aja's take on one of the all time horror classics, and can only wish this film the greatest of success as it is thus far one of the best and most brutal mainstream horror films in quite some time.  On the other hand, it's also a double edged sword as yet another remake's success will only spur on more.  Please, pleeeeeease don't let this be the lynchpin in the rumored Last House on the Left remake coming to fruition.
