It’s Heeere: POLTERGEIST Special Edition DVD Due October 9th

After much speculation, rumors, and remastering work, Tobe Hooper’s phenomenally entertaining haunted house thriller POLTERGEIST is due to be released in a special edition DVD on October 9^th, the same day as Joe Lynch’s WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END. POLTERGEIST was initially released on DVD by MGM/UA Home Entertainment in 1997 as a DVD-5 (single-sided, single-layered) and looked…well…less than stellar.  The new DVD, however, will of course be a DVD-9 (singled-sided, dual-layered) and remastered in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, with the customary Dolby Digital 5.1 & 2.0 audio tracks. Some of the extras will include:

- new documentary "They Are Here: The Real World of Poltergeists Revealed"

- “The Science of the Spirits - Communing With The Dead”

- trailer gallery

Notably absent is behind-the-scenes footage and a running commentary.  I really hope that these features will make their way to the disc, as these are the very extras that I look forward to with remastered editions of movies.  To be honest, the extras that are listed fall far short of what I’d like to see.  This should most definitely be a 2-disc set.  Retail is $19.97.  High definition editions should be available in 2008.
