Tragedy. Websters defines this as calamity or misfortune, a disastrous event. Doom - one of the biggest video games to date, stars The Rock and costs 70 million to make, summer blockbuster makes 28 mil': trajedy. Canadian film, The Dark Hours - widespread acclaim for acting, wins best feature at festivals, goes straight to video in the US: trajedy. Evilenko - man kills and eats 50 or so children. I have room for more in my stomach, but in essence: trajedy. Being invited to see an early screening of the new Hills Have Eyes and having to miss it for an $8 an hour piece of crap job monkeys could do... no, not priceless... TRAJEDY! Nevertheless, my DVD player is hungry and needs food. So without further adeiu - from the amateur independant filmmaker to the mega-dollar hollywood productions... Here are the new DVD releases for this frigid week of February 7th, 2006...
Doom (2005)
- watch the trailer windows media -
113 minutes
Unrated - containing strong violence/gore and language
Starring The Rock, Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike
Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak
Doom broke new ground, introducing the first-person-shooter POV - this game adaptation was a more accurate film version than Resident Evil was to its video counterpart. Heavy on gore, casted with The Rock who you know is up to any physical challenge - its time to get your ass to Mars and close the gates of hell! Filmed on a budget of 70 million (which makes you wonder why the special effects were so cheesy) - all hell broke loose when this hit the theaters - only grossing 28 million in the US. Ouch!
IMDB Plot Summary: Something has gone wrong at a remote scientific research station on Mars. All research has ceased. Communication has failed. And the messages that do get through are less than comforting. It's a level 5 quarantine and the only souls allowed in or out are the Rapid Response Tactical Squad - hardened Space Marines armed to the teeth with enough firepower to neutralize the enemy... or so they think.
DVD features include: Subtitles (English, Spanish, French), Audio tracks for each language in Dolby 5.1, "Basic Training", "Rock Formation", "Master Monster Makers", "First Person Shooter Sequence", "Doom Nation", "Game on!", and a Doom 3 Xbox demo...

The Dark Hours (2005)
- watch the trailer (quicktime) -
80 minutes
Rated R for terror/violence, a scene of self mutilation, language and sexual content
Starring Kate Greenhouse, Gordon Currie
Directed by Paul Fox
This Canadian produced film was a smash last year at the film festivals, containing a well-paced story with unpredicatable twists, and good acting to boot - it won amongst other things, Best Feature Film at the prestigious New York Horror Film Festival in 2005. A movie of this caliber really should have gotten a wide release. If you're in the dark on what to buy this week, The Dark Hours will not disappoint.
Amazon.com Description: Dr. Samantha Goodman (Kate Greenhouse) is a beautiful, young psychiatrist at an institute for the criminally insane. Burnt out, she drives to the family’s winter cottage to spend time with her husband and sister. A relaxing weekend is jarringly interrupted when a terrifying and unexpected guest arrives. Harlan Payne (Aidan Devine) is a violent sex offender and patient of the doctor. He has escaped from the hospital seeking revenge. Harlan is convinced Dr. Goodman once conducted experiments on him. What follows is an extraordinary night of terror and evil mind games where escape is not an option.

Evilenko (2005)
99 minutes
Unrated
Starring Malcolm McDowell, Marton Csokas, Ronald Pickup
Directed by David Grieco
IMDB Plot Summary: Based on the true story of A. R. Cikatilo, also known as the monster of Rostov. A. R. Evilenko (Malcolm McDowell) is a serial killer who killed and ate more than 50 children in old Soviet Republic. V. T. Lesiev (Marton Csokas) is the detective who tracks down and catches him.
There is a book out called Cannibal Killers, by Moira Martingale. In it, several mass murderers are detailed in true-crime fashion. One of them was Mr. Cikatilo, who did in fact hunt down and eat about 50 children in his poor, russian town. Its amazing he got away with it for as long as he did - in this case, as in many others, the killer is hard to profile, and usually walks amongst the townspeople as one of their own. Previous viewers of this film claim it to be a mess, aside from McDowell, who acted superb. If Malcom McDowell doesn't turn you on, and you'd rather read facts, including details they can't show you on screen - pick up the book which is linked below. From opening page to its index, I guarantee, you wont put it down.

Poltergeist: The Legacy - The Complete First Season (1996)
982 minutes

Starring Derek de Lint, Martin Cummins, Robbi Chong

This particular Legacy team is set in San Francisco in a castle-like house on Angel Island. Dr. Derek Rayne (Derek de Lint) heads up the team comprised of psychiatrist, Rachel Corrigan (Helen Shaver); priest, Philip C. (Patrick Fitzgerald); ex-Navy SEAL, Nick Boyle (Martin Cummins); and researcher/psychic Alex Moreau (Robbi Chong).

Sugar (2005)
82 minutes
n/a
Starring Samara Golden
Directed by Patrick Jolley, Reynold Reynolds
Amazon.com Description: When a woman rents a miserably tiny room, she finds mountains of belongings from the previous tenant, "Anthony," as well as messages on the machine from the landlord, his mother, and a calm, threatening Irishman. As she cleans up the place, she begins to experience uncanny visions, nightmares, and the feeling that Anthony is much closer than she imagined. "Sugar" is a terrifying, intoxicating cockroach-eye view into the sweet surrender of hysteria and comforts of urban claustrophobia that will have you crawling out of your skin.

Demon Hunter (2005)
90 minutes
Rated R
Starring Colleen Porch, Robert Alonzo, Billy Drago
Directed by Scott Ziehl
A half-human-half-demon works for the Catholic Church in its ceaseless battle against the powers of hell. Billy Drago plays Asmodeus, an evil demon bent on possessing and impregnating women. If you've seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you already know how this goes. It was created on a one million dollar budget, and according to Amazon.com, was released theatrically in June of 2005. Damned if I can remember it.
