Hellbent (2004)

- trailer (flash)

Plot Synopsis:  Slasher film meets gay romance in this horror outing from executive producer Joe Wolf, a co-creator of such classics as Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween. With a look that borrows from both 1970s horror and candy-colored L.A. fantasy, the film follows four likeable young gay men who hit the town on Halloween, with big plans to attend West Hollywood's extravagant Carnival celebration. The group is comprised of Eddie (Dylan Ferguson), a wholesome type who works at the police station; Chaz (Andrew Levitas), a bisexual hedonist; shy, inexperienced Joey (Hank Williams); and Tobey (Matt Phillips), a male model who longs for true love. At work, Eddie saw some police photos of a gruesome slaying the night before, when two gay men who were making out in a car were brutally decapitated, so Eddie is duly cautious, but his three friends are intent on having a good time. Thrill-seeking Chaz takes the boys for a shortcut through the woods where the murders took place, and, en route, they encounter a well-built silent type in a devil's mask, who they think is trying to pick them up. They tease and taunt, unaware that this is the very same murderer from the night before, and the rest of the night this mysterious being--who may or may not be human--stalks the friends to extract his revenge. Meanwhile, the virginal Joey has a life-altering encounter with the man of his dreams, while Eddie makes headway on a relationship with Jake (Bryan Kirkwood), the motorcycle-riding, cigarette-smoking bad boy. Much of the film's appeal lies in the spectacular location footage of the Carnival, while the plot delivers some true nail-biting suspense along with plenty of gore. Although it's pretty clear from the beginning who will and won't make it through the night alive, there are still plenty of surprises, including a very memorable eyeball scene that will disturb even the least squeamish of viewers. ~ Amazon.com

Masters of Horror: Dance of the Dead (2005)

Plot Synopsis:  Peggy just might be the last innocent girl left in a post-apocalyptic world. Nine years earlier, Peggy watched as a rain of toxic chemicals maimed, scarred and/or killed her friends at her seventh birthday party. It is a memory which haunts her still, along with the deaths of her father and older sister Anna. Sheltered by her overprotective mother, the pretty sixteen year old Peggy works in the family diner in a town which has all but dried up and blown away. When a group of dangerous punks wanders into the diner one day, Peggy is immediately attracted to the leader, Jak, a tough but nice guy. It is love at first sight, but Peggy's hate- filled mother kicks the foursome out. It's too late though. Jak has already arranged to meet Peggy at midnight, and Peggy slips away with Jak and his friends to the forbidden and dangerous town of Muskeet, where the diseased and the dying go to party. Peggy is taken to the Doom Room, a scummy nightclub run by a sleazy Emcee (Robert Englund) who literally deals in blood. The toxic rainfall of 9 years earlier left many of its victims in a state of undeath, but when injected with fresh blood, the zombies are briefly reanimated. Hauled out onto the grimy stage of the Doom Room, the zombies are poked with cattle prods, twitching and contorting for the amusement of the customers. This is the Dance of the Dead, and Peggy will learn more about it in one night than she ever wanted to know. ~ IMDB.com

Murder a La Mod/The Moving Finger (1968)

Plot Synopsis

Murder a La Mod:  Lost horror from Brian De Palma! Love-starved Karen is startled to learn that her boyfriend Christopher earns a living making nudie movies with a creep named Otto (the always odd William Finley). Believing Christopher is only in the skinflick scene to make enough money to divorce his wife, Karen steals some cash for him but, while attempting to deliver it, is attacked by Otto and his ice pick... To reveal more would spoil things except to note that Murder a la Mod culminates in a surprisingly gory murder that not only echoes Psycho but anticipates snuff films as well. Brian De Palma's directorial debut is a witty, bloody, funny, cynical and downright nasty little gem that, until now, has remained maddeningly impossible to see since its theatrical release in 1968 (where it played a single New York theater). Full of the same gritty vibe as his Greetings and Sisters, Murder a la Mod is De Palma at his most De Mented!

The Moving Finger:  A rare beatnik artifact of the early 1960s, one of only a few such films made before the hippies took over Hollywood. Low budget and in b&w, it's set in Greenwich Village, with what seems like a mostly improvised script. Directed by Larry Moyer, it begin as a late film noir crime tale involving a bank robbery where only one of a group of thieves escapes with his life, as well as $90,000 in loot. Injured and on the run, he hides in a local tour bus and is soon taken in by a group of bohemians who shoot him full of morphine to ease his pain and let him sleep it off on a mattress. 60's cult hero and "Vanishing Point" star, Barry Newman plays Mason, head beatnik. Multi-generational star Lionel Stander is the owner of both an upstairs coffeehouse and garret, where these beatniks hang out. They, in turn, bring the tourist trade in. Although the robbery is supposed to be the main focus of the plot, it quickly turns into more of a character study featuring these rebellious bon vivants and their odd lifestyle, which includes smoking and selling dope, mooching at art galleries, long conversations about all sorts of things and a beat shindig, shot Cinema Verite style in the director's actual apartment. Along the way, they do things like shower together at the home of an heiress and mostly plot ways to get the bank heist money away from Barry Newman, who's too clean-cut to be one of them, but wins us over with his naturally arrogant charisma. The whole thing climaxes at the Feast of San Gennaro, in a typically documentary style conclusion. ~ Amazon.com
