Tomorrow night brings yet another Monster Monday presented by Fangoria Entertainment. Fango
has been holding these little fan fests every Monday for a few months
now and have been featuring great little films that might not
ordinarily get a chance for a theatrical showing.
This Monday they will present the film DISORDER. I originally was exposed to this film back in my Creature Corner days and have remained a fan all this time. The
films director Jack Thomas Smith gave me a call the other night and we
talked about his adventure in making the film and even more about his
adventure in getting the film out to the masses.
DD: Did you ever consider releasing the film through the festival circuit?
JS: You know what’s funny? I got turned down by every single festival I submitted Disorder to.
DD: You’re kidding me. Does anyone even screen these submissions or do they just go by packaging and presentation?
JS: You know, I have no idea but I don’t put a lot of value on the festival circuit... This is just me speaking for me but I don’t put a lot of value in festivals. I sent Disorder to 20 or 30 festivals and got turned down by every single one of them.
DD: So screw em… (laughs)
JS: (Laughing)
Exactly…. I mean look at Sundance, how do you consider a film to be an
independent when you’ve got Jennifer Aniston in it, I mean come on
man...
DD: So, how did you come up with the plotline for DISORDER, what was the genesis of the project?
JS: Well, it’s funny. I came up with the idea for the script and it’s hard for me to explain it to you without ruining the movie for viewers.
DD: We don’t want that!
JS: So I can tell you how I came up with the end, just so you don’t print it.
DD: Can you maybe explain the catalyst, was it an event in your life or something you seen?
JS: No
it was just like the idea popped into my head man, and I am such a huge
fan of horror films and I so much wanted to so something different and
well, you’ve seen it and you know how it ends so hopefully I have
accomplished bringing something original to the table.
DD: I
think the best way to put it is that you have found a way to bring fans
a typical slasher film but have managed to present it in such a fashion
that it comes across as original and new.
JS: Exactly, exactly….
DD: That’s what I really liked about DISORDR is that it was truly frightening and original, just not the same old shit.
JS: Thank you, thanks a lot. That’s really what I was going for.
DD: Where did you find your lead actor?
JS: Darren Kendrick. I did all of my casting out of New York. Basically
I just placed an ad in Backstage and interviewed literally hundreds of
people but when Darren walked in I knew instantly that he was our man,
he was David Randall. I mean when I say him it was like holy crap, this is the guy.
DD: So, what’s next now that DISORDER is getting released what can we look forward to from Jack Smith?
JS: Well, I have already started on my next project titled IN THE DARK. I’m in the process of getting the financing in place for that one
DD: So, let’s talk about the DVD release.
JS: Sure, October 3rd 2006 is the day. Disorder
Day nation wide. New Light Entertainment and Universal Music and Video
Distribution are releasing it. The deal was brokered through my
sales agent Jeff Cooper at Cut Entertainment Group and I encourage all
producers to contact them as they did a great job for me.
DD: How awesome to have Universal releasing your film.
JS:
Oh my God you had better believe it. It’s amazing when I tell
people that it is being released by Universal. It gives you
instant clout and respect, ya know.
DD: What goodies can we look forward to on the disc?
JS: Yeah, a Directors commentary, the original trailer and also the MPAA approved trailer which pissed me off. I had to go in and cut my trailer twice till they would finally give me the green tag on it. We also have a music video
DD: So, you get a theatrical screening Monday night.
JS: Yeah, actually it gets even better than that. The first showing at 6:30 pm has sold out and we’ve added a second show later that night. Also we have been asked to return the following Monday night for another Monster Monday screening.
DD: SWEET! I think that is unprecedented for a Monster Monday film.
JS: Really? That’s cool. We are also going to be having a screening in Dallas on Sept. 7th at 7:30 PM at the Magnolia Theater and then also a screening in northeast PA, in Philly and also LA. Don’t have dates for those ones yet but I’ll let you know when we’ve got dates so you can pass it along to your readers.
DD: Yeah, please do. It just keeps getting better and better huh?
JS: It’s very exciting
DD: Well,
I’m excited to see the film finally getting the recognition it deserves
and wish you the best of luck with your Monster Monday screenings. Drop me a line after the screening and let me know how things went.
JS: Shall do Dave. Thanks.
If you’re in the NYC area you may want to find a way to make it to Two Boots Pioneer theatre and check out this little gem. It is well worth your effort.
