Animal (2014) Review:
I hope that when you read the synopsis above you thought: “Oh no, not another one of these movies”. Well, I’m sorry for you, because Animal is exactly that: just another movie like that!
The story is as cliché of a monster movie as it gets: a group of friends goes hiking, get lost in the woods at night, get attacked by a monster, find refuge in a house that appear right in front of them at the good moment, etc… The rest of the movie is about them being trapped in the house waiting for the creature to attack them… kind of like every other bad monster movies. The same goes for the generic aspect of the characters: you have the usual bunch with the couple in love, the funny dude, the asshole, etc. And if having a black adopted girl as the main character is the only original idea that the writers could come up with, I guess I can start writing scenario for Hollywood tomorrow…
Ok, maybe I’m being a bit harsh here, because there are a couple of good ideas in that movie, but they are so buried into a mass of predictability that nothing stands out! I personally was quickly bored by Animal, finding it too easy to guess who will die and when, and getting annoyed by the lack of realism of the movie. For example, the monsters appears super powerful at times, and yet is not able to break into a windows just protected by one crappy plank… really?
The only thing left to that movie is the monster, who doesn’t look too bad, but yet again has nothing special. It’s just a large humanoid beast with huge teeth who looks a lot like the creatures in Feast, the latter being a much better movie every aspect.
