An American Haunting (2005) Synopsis:
After a dispute about land, a family gets cursed by a witch. Soon afterwards, the family, and particularly the young girl, gets attacked by a hostile spirit.
An American Haunting (2005) Review:
An American haunting is supposedly based on true horror event. Well this usually something I do not care much about as long as the story is good, but here, the story is good, but also sound relatively plausible, which is unusual for possession movies!
What I liked most in that film is that it took a different approach than most other similar movies. Most exorcism films follow up the descent into madness of possessed victims down to total possession and hop, end of the film. Here, it is different, the viewer get to see and understand the problem from very early on, and even gets to see the spirit itself. Then you are left to try and solve the problem with the other members of the family for the rest of the film. I found that terribly entertaining.
Of course, this conceals the scary aspect of the film, but being scary doesn’t seem to be the goal of that film (otherwise they failed). Instead, I appreciated how, after a while, the family stopped to be scared and tried to take practical measure to fight the spirit! I believe this more realistic of what real people would do if a member of their family was in such danger.
The acting is one of the strong points in that movie. Great acting performance are completed by the presence of familiar faces such as Donald Sutherland (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) or Sissy Spacek (Carrie). The camera shot, like the first person view from the spirit eye, are also worth noticing for they are superb.
Overall a great entertainment!
