American Horror Story Season 3: Coven (2013-2014) Review:

Goodbye the multi-genres aspect of the previous two American Horror Story seasons (Season 2 included sci-fi horror, possession, madness horror and even aliens!), this third season focuses almost exclusively on witches and war between covens.

This could have been perfectly fine because season 2 tended to dilute itself in too many side stories, making it a bit messy at time. In Coven, the scenario is more focused than its predecessor, but somehow ends up being less captivating too. The story, in my opinion, delivered less surprises than usual, and even got a little repetitive after a few episodes. For example, almost each episode played with the concept of “who could be the next supreme?”, every episode leading you to think that it could be a different witch.

But Coven is before all a great pretext to feature back all the notorious actors who made the success of Season 1 and 2. Fans will be happy to recognize most faces. Jessica Lange is, as usual, the highlight of the series for she gives so much strength and credibility to her character. I was quite disappointed by the performance of both Evan Peters, who plays a Frankenstein-like creature and Taissa Farmiga in her usual innocent creature role, for they get enrolled in a rather pointless love story that really seemed out of focus with the rest of the story. As for the newcomers, they are pretty awesome, especially Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe in the role of the voodoo queen and the black teen witch respectively, who made a very strong impression.

In the end, I think what annoyed me most with that season is how it came back to the soap TV series aspect of the first season, and got distracted from the pure horror aspect. There are a few gruesome scenes, but overall the season isn’t centered on scaring the audience as the second season was (I am a huge fan of the 2cd season in case you didn’t understand by now). It is more about intrigue and witch politics.

Still, this season remains of very high standard and couldn’t possibly be described as anything less than good. Let’s just say that I found it a little less good than the others.
